OTTAWA - The withdrawal of Indigenous organizations from today’s First Ministers’ meeting is the Prime Minister’s failure, NDP leadership candidate and MP Charlie Angus (Timmins - James Bay) said today.
“Telling Indigenous representatives that they don’t deserve full access is a failure to respect the principles of reconciliation,” Angus said. “And it is a failure to respect the nation-to-nation relationship.”
The Assembly of First Nations, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, and the Métis Nation issued a joint statement Sunday saying they have withdrawn from the meeting because they were only allowed to participate in part of the meetings.
“The Prime Minister needs to make his word mean something when it comes to developing a true Nation to Nation relationship. This is about building bridges and a better path forward.
“As a country, we can do better, and we must do better,” Angus said.
